Support Engineering

Joe Stern, graduated from UCONN with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1944. He went on to a varied and creative 50-year career in telecommunications. One of his legacies is a scholarship that he established the year before he died to help female engineers achieve their academic goal. His daughter, Linda Jo Stern (UCONN, BS, Nutritional Sciences) and his grandson Jesse Kahn, continue to fund the scholarship so that more students can benefit. A year before he died of complications from prostate cancer, Joe received the 2003 award from the Academy of Distinguished Engineers from the School of Engineering at UCONN, his alma mater.  There is a scholarship at UCONN established in his honor to assist female engineers in continuing their studies.  
Here is the professional bio that accompanied his award.

Mr. Stern was the founder and president of Stern Telecommunications Corporation (STC) in New York City, a telecommunication systems consulting company.  STC was responsible for the design of 25 CATV, three direct broadcast satellites and seven private microwave systems.  STC counseled municipalities and building owners on environmental impact matters.  Following graduation from UCONN, Mr. Stern worked for RCA and then served in the Army Signal Corps.  In 1946, he began a long career with CBS.  He was appointed Vice President of Engineering and was responsible for developing TV studio and transmitting facilities, including the Empire State Building plant, planning for the World Trade Center facility and 12 other plants in North and South America and Israel.  He worked on the development of color TV systems and converted all of the CBS transmitting plants to broadcast color in 1975.  He held five US patents including one awarded in 2002 relating to the convergence of conventional TV and the internet.
